Founded more than 2,500 years ago, Civita di Bagnoregio, in the province of Viterbo, central Italy, became a threatened city of extinction. During the 20th century, the local population was dwindling, and few residents remained, thus transforming it into a real ghost town.
However, such a landscape is still worth a trip. This is a wonderful view of nature’s ingenuity and human wisdom.
Despite the beautiful landscapes and medieval buildings, the location of the city proved a disaster. Earthquakes and erosion caused the city to be isolated throughout the 17th century, and the local population began to refer to it as “il Paese Che Muore” (The Dying city).
The erosion of the cliff caused the collapse of several buildings, causing several families to leave the place. In the year 2000, there were only six people inhabiting the city.
Thanks to a recent interest caused by tourism, the population doubled, with 12 inhabitants living there during the winter and almost 100 during the summer months.
The decline of the small town, as well as its location, caused it to be spared during the two world wars, keeping its original architecture intact. This has contributed to the popularity of the city in recent years, as few places in Europe have remained so well preserved.
In 2004 plans were made to reinforce the hill where the city is with steel bars to try to prevent further erosion actions. In 2006, the organization “World Monuments Fund” put the small town on the list of the 100 places in the world’s highest danger.
It may take centuries for Civita di Bagnoregio to disappear, or just a few years. The thing is, if nothing is done, this precious memory of other eras will be lost forever.
The inspiration for Miyazaki’s Sky City comes from this. However, its unique landscape and unique architectural features make it famous, and it is listed as one of the ten most beautiful towns in Italy.
About an hour and a half from Rome. The scenery along the way is very beautiful, the landscape is picturesque, and it has already entered the city of the sky as if it had entered the fairyland.
If time-honored and leisurely friends can spend half a day here to enjoy the beautiful scenery and wonderful experience, there are several restaurants under the trestle, you can enjoy the scenery while dining. However, the time spent really exploring new things is very short, so I don’t recommend more than an hour and a half on the schedule.
However, such a landscape is still worth a trip. This is a wonderful view of nature’s ingenuity and human wisdom. One of the friends who drive by the middle can take a special turn to see it. Time can be fully deployed.
